- What is a burr?
A burr is one of the common phenomena in processing; the protrusions protruding from the surface of the workpiece are burrs.
- Which manufacturing processes leave burrs? (How are burrs formed)
Using different manufacturing methods to produce sheet metal parts or components can sometimes result in burrs. This includes the following:
- Machining: (Milling, Drilling, Turning, Die Casting)
- Cutting Processes: (Laser Cutting, Oxyfuel Flame Cutting, Plasma Cutting, Punching, Waterjet Cutting).
Formation of Burrs:
- Laser: During laser processing, slight protrusions appear on the surface or edges of the workpiece, affecting the tactile and visual texture presentation.
- Punch Press: In conjunction with the die, the punch press cuts metal by extrusion cutting. Therefore, each piece of metal will have burrs on the cut surface after being punched and cut, and the height of the burrs increases with the thickness of the plate.
Plasma or Flame Cutting; During the cutting process, traces are left on the material surface due to high-temperature processing. The hotter the material, the more pronounced the formation of burrs.
- What are the possible consequences of parts that have not been deburred.
Metal burrs may cause puncture wounds or cuts.
Burrs may cause wear and tear of equipment or tools during the manufacturing process.
When burrs are larger, they can cause problems in the linking and assembly process; there is insufficient fitting precision, and the surfaces may have scratches due to inadequate tightness.
- Deburring Methods - There are several different options for metal deburring.
Manual Deburring: This is the oldest and most basic method; it relies on the skill and experience of the workers, leading to potentially inconsistent quality. Long-term use of hand tools can cause occupational injuries due to continuous vibration.
Vibratory Grinding Machine: Suitable for smaller parts. Large sheet metal parts cannot be processed with it.
Metal Deburring Machine: Capable of processing large sheet metal workpieces; the appropriate grinding material can be selected based on different requirements, allowing for the removal of even very stubborn burrs.
- Advantages of Using a Metal Deburring Machine
Increase Work Efficiency, Save Time: The machine operates faster than manual work.
Reduce Personnel and Occupational Safety Injuries: The machine replaces manual handling of power tools.
Capable of performing repetitive tasks, achieving consistent quality.
